Budapest
is made up of twin cities of a very different character. Buda has the old city,
with Castle Hill, which looks over the mighty Danube towards cosmopolitan Pest,
with its grand boulevards and fine shops.
Sightseeing
Castle Hill, on the Buda side, is the oldest part of the city, a warren of
cobblestones with the Royal Palace, the great St Matthias Church and the 7
turrets of the Fishermen's Bastion which afford fine panoramic views over the
city. The famous chain bridge, which is beautifully lit at night, spans the
Danube and links Buda with Pest - and is perhaps the symbol of the whole city.
In Pest, take in the vast Heroes' Square and perhaps visit the museums around
it. There is also the gothic parliament building, the National Museum and the
hand of St Stephen in his eponymous basilica!
Shopping
The pedestrian Vaci utca on the Pest side offers all kinds of goods on sale,
from folk art ceramics and embroidery to fine jewellery. Have a look at the
beautiful wares in Herend Porcelain. Castle Hill has smaller, quaint shops set
amongst the cobbled streets.
Wining & Dining
Meals in restaurants and good local wines are still well priced by our standards
and there is plenty of choice, if you need a break from authentic Hungarian
goulash. There are plenty of bars, lots of night clubs and casinos, very often
in the hotels. Stylish Café Gerbeaud and Café New York offer the chance to
step back in time and enjoy afternoon tea and cakes or an evening meal, in very
elegant surroundings.
Getting Around
From the airport a taxi to your hotel will cost around Ł15 and take around 30
minutes. The underground provides a good service, especially within Pest. Worth
buying is the unlimited transport day ticket (Ł2) for buses, metro and trams,
or the Budapest card (Ł8 for 3 days) which offers unlimited travel and free or
reduced entry to museums and other sights. Many places of interest are clustered
within walking area on both sides of the river and there is a funicular up to
Castle Hill.
